Did you ever wonder why holding hands, petting your dog or getting a back rub feels so good? Human touch stimulates physical benefits inside of the body that boost immune function for improved physical and emotional health.

Studies suggest that simple human touch reduces stress, increases airflow in asthmatics and eases arthritis pain. Human touch has been proven to decrease cortisol levels, a stress hormone released by the adrenal glands. Decreased cortisol levels in turn decrease blood pressure and heart rate, and change brain chemicals to diminish stress and pain overall.

Although everyday touch is critical for human survival, we live in a ‘touch averse’ society. A therapeutic, hands-on approach to touch through Reiki, reflexology or moderate pressure massage are a few of the many ways that you can provide the same healthy benefits of touch for yourself.

Our skin is our largest and most sensate organ. I encourage you to hug often, shake hands firmly, schedule a massage or Reiki session and get the touch your body needs to thrive!
